TYPES OF HORSE RACING BETS

  • Win only - The simplest type of horse racing bet. Just choose the horse you think you will win, and if they do, then you get paid out. If they lose, you get nothing.

  • Each way - In an each way bet, half of your stake is bet on the horse winning, and the other half is bet on the horse to finish in the places at a specified fraction of the odds. The number of places and the fraction of the odds depend on the number of runners in the race and the bookmakers’ terms.

  • Forecast - In a forecast bet, you need to choose all of the horses that will finish in the places for potentially very big odds. You can either simply choose the horses, or you can be more precise and choose the exact order in which they will finish.

  • Trixie - A type of combination bet. In a trixie, you pick three horses, and with those three selections, you make two double bets and a treble bet. This type of bet gives more flexibility than your standard multi-bet.

MAJOR HORSE RACING EVENTS

Melbourne Cup

Run over 3.2km at Flemington in November, the Melbourne Cup draws audiences the world over for the most prestigious race in Australia - the “race that stops a nation”. Nearly 100,000 people attend the race each year, which is the richest two-mile handicap in the world.

The Everest

While it doesn’t have the history of the Melbourne Cup, with its first running only in 2017, The Everest is the richest race in Australia with prize money of $10 million. The Everest mirrors the Pegasus World Cup in its entry scheme, with entrants purchasing a berth in the race and then either racing their own horse or negotiating with other owners to enter their horse, as James Harron did with the owners of winner Redzel last year.

Queen Elizabeth Stakes

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a 2km thoroughbred race held at Randwick, and in 2014 became the most expensive weight-for-age race in Australia, with prize money of $4 million. The race is one of the most prestigious in the world and was won in 2017 by the outstanding mare and hall of famer Winx.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST HORSE RACING BETTING SITE

Choosing the best horse racing betting site is a personal matter and all of us will have different factors that we consider more than important than others. However, if we want to have a good experience when betting on the horses, here are some of the important aspects to consider.

Variety of Markets and Coverage

Most bookmakers in Australia will offer the most basic markets on the majority of domestic horse racing, and just as many will offer a decent range of markets on the biggest races like the Melbourne Cup, but after this there is a big variety in the level of coverage that different bookmakers give horse racing. Some will offer plenty of markets above and beyond the standard win/place bets, while others will offer markets not just for the big events but for daily racing as well as international racing. If you love your racing then you’ll need a site that offers more than just the major events and basic markets.

Odds

Of course, if you want to make some decent money out of your horse racing betting, then you will need to be getting the best odds available more often than not. The odds will vary from race to race between bookmakers, but generally you will find that some bookies offer consistently better odds on racing than others, so picking a bookie with decent odds most of the time is important to being successful.

Reviews

The easiest and simplest way to get an idea of what each horse racing bookie has to offer is to use our extensive review section, where you can get an in-depth guide to each bookie including promotions and other sometimes overlooked factors like customer service, user interface and in-play betting options.
